League of Legends Worlds 2021 Team Draw Takeaways

It's that time of the year again! The LOL World Championship will begin on October 5. We now know precisely which teams will be playing. The previous Wednesday, G2 Esports jungler Marcin "Jankos" Jankowski joined Riot Games' Worlds 2021 Draw Show and pulled team names to create both the PlayIn groups as well as Group Stage groups. PlayIn Group Stage

Since they are the lowest, final seeds of their regions, Beyond Gaming and Cloud9 will have to steel themselves and keep their momentum in order to avoid a knockout stage matchup against either Hanwha Life Esports or LNG Esports. While Beyond Gaming and Cloud9 will do their best to ensure they maintain their top performance to make it to the Main Event Group Stage, other teams will be looking to take them out of the top spot. Unicorns of Love are one of the most successful minor region teams ever and will be the favorite to not only finish third but also take on second place. Detonation FocusMe will be hot to follow with their support Yang "Gaeng" Gwangwoo back in the lineup, making the team much more formidable than their MidSeason Invitational iteration. Main Event Group Stage

The 12 teams that have already been qualified for the Main Event are grouped in one of four groups. They will start playing following the time that four teams from the PlayIn Stage join them. The Worlds Knockout Stage will be occupied by the top two teams from each group.

Group A: DWG KIA, FunPlus Phoenix, Rogue

Some fans might consider Group A as a "group of death" and not just since any team could be eliminated, but rather because Rogue's chances of winning are slim given DWG KIA and FunPlus Phoenix leading the group. DWG KIA is the South Korean champion and FunPlus Phoenix are the strongest. FunPlus Phoenix's defeat to EDward Gaming in LPL finals led them to be the second seed in Pool 2. It was a disastrous outcome for any team, and Rogue appears to be one of the teams. Rogue's performance in the LEC playoffs after their Worlds qualification is a red flag. This means that the chances of the team getting to the knockout stage appear to be slim.

Group B: EDward Gaming, 100 Thieves, T1

T1 and EDward Gaming are clear favorites in Group A, however 100 Thieves may be as strong as North America's champions. EDward Gaming dominated FunPlus Phoenix in the LPL finals and appear to be an assured choice to be top of the group as well, while T1 struggled against DWG KIA in the LCK playoffs as well as Hanwha Life Esports in the LCK regional finals, making the Lee "Faker" Sanghyeokled lineup seem more prone to failure. 100 Thieves complete the North American champions group and will be looking to outspeed each of EDward Gaming, and T1 by executing a decisive early-game skirmish.

Group C: PSG Talon, Fnatic, Royal Never Give Up

Group C, unlike Group A and B , is more of a balanced team. PSG Talon, the champions of the group, come from the Pacific Championship Series. In the meantime, Fnatic and Royal Never Give Up were third and second within their respective regions. If there was a group to allow PSG Talon to be the first Taiwanese team since 2015 to reach the quarterfinals, this is it.

Group D: MAD Lions, Gen.G, Team Liquid

This is the "group of death" If ever there was one. Despite the fact that LNG Esports may be the final team, MAD Lions and Gen.G will likely be at each other’s throats. MAD Lions profile as favorites with a strong hold on the LEC all year long, but both Gen.G and Team Liquid have the earlygame ability to thwart some of the team's weak midgame transitions.
